Discover London’s secret underground rail

The Postal Museum’s latest attraction, an underground train that was once used to transport mail, is one of London’s weirdest activities, and yet it’s proving exceptionally popular.

Open to the public for the first time, the Mail Rail is a hundred-year-old Post Office railway that once took mail from Paddington to Liverpool Street Stations, stopping at sorting offices on the way. Abandoned in 2003, it has since been looked after by a handful of Mail Rail engineers, and is now a cool new museum piece.

Visitors board one of Mail Rail’s trains and descend into the network of stalactite-filled tunnels and watch the largely unchanged station platforms go by. It’s a fun insight into how the service once ran during its 1930s heydays, and a welcome peek at another one of London’s hidden gems.
