London’s sizzling new steak experience

It’s show-time in Mayfair with the arrival of table-top cooking at Sakagura, one of the area’s finest Asian eateries.

One thing London is not short of is great steak houses. But before now we’ve never had the chance to sear our own cuts at the table.

Enter Sakagura, the informal Japanese restaurant on trendy Heddon Street that has just launched a new Lava Stone menu. Tender Argentinian sirloin and rib-eye cuts arrive at the table with a flat Ishiyaki stone, so you can grill your meat at a fiery 400 degrees in about five minutes flat.

The steak ends up just the way you like it – with the added fun of doing it yourself. Brilliant sides include fresh wasabi (watch out for the kick!) as well as authentic eastern-inspired sauces such as misodare and ponzu oroshi. And, if you want to swap rice for chips, the Hakata fries are rich and crispy, flavoured with Asian herbs and spices. Raise a little glass of sake to a night well-fed.
