Best five BBQ spots you can reach by train

Nothing says summer quite like a BBQ, and these cookout spots are the perfect excuse to meet with friends for an awesome evening al fresco style. Pack your picnic essentials and make your way to these friendly barbecue places across the network that are all easily reached by train. Just remember to clear all your rubbish away when it’s time to head home.

Caledonian Park

London
Fire up the coals and get those sausages sizzling. Caledonian Park in London is a lovely spot to cook some summer grub. It’s also one of very few places in the capital that has been given the green light for grilling, following a big city ban after a record-breaking number of grass fires (stay safe, people!). The centrepiece of the park is a grade II listed Clock Tower and you’ll also discover community orchards, woodlands and a sports court. Simply keep your BBQ raised so it’s not placed directly on the grass and enjoy a sunny evening here with pals.

Bute Park

Cardiff
Sit back and relax in Cardiff’s beautiful Bute Park. Brimming with horticulture, wildlife and no less than three cafes, this wonderful green space is a great place to unwind with the gang. When it comes to lighting up a BBQ, simply keep it raised so it doesn’t leave scorch marks on the ground and fully extinguish it before binning it. Easy.

Porthmeor Beach

St Ives
Just a short walk from St Ives train station, Porthmeor Beach is one of the best spots to watch the sunset as it offers mega views across the Atlantic coast. Flip burgers while the evening sun beats down and the golden sand becomes a cosy cushion – could there be a better excuse for a BBQ?

Highbury Fields

London
With so few Londoners having their own gardens or private outdoor spaces, parks become a haven during the summer months. The few that allow BBQs are extremely popular and Highbury Fields is an oasis well worth a visit if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of central London. With a designated BBQ area on the west side of the field, all that’s left to do is bring your favourite food for grilling. Just make sure you wrap up by 9pm, when the barbecue curfew comes into action.

Clifton Downs

Bristol
This big green space on the edge of the city is a thriving parkland that’s home to loads of events throughout the year, including charity runs and funfairs. Head to the designated area off Ladies Mile and you’ll find stone slabs for your BBQ, as well as picnic benches where you can enjoy your scrumptious al fresco feast.
