Fun things to do in Bristol

Mix things up in the gifted city that keeps on giving, and visit a classic of the seven seas and enjoy some of the best street art around.

Why go there?

From balloons to beats, Brunel to Banksy, Bristol has got a lot going on. Recently named the best place to live in the UK, the city is also the perfect place for day trips and weekend getaways, and Bristolians are rightly proud of their cultural contributions to maritime and world heritage.

Where do I start?

Take a dockside walk and tread the decks of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s historic ship SS Great Britain, or make some incredible discoveries in the nearby At-Bristol Science Centre. Between 22 July and 3 September At-Bristol will host the Festival of What If – a celebration of curiosity, featuring hands-on activities, installations, music, art, workshops, films and more.

Where should I kip?

Unmistakably the definite article, The Bristol Hotel has just the right balance of sleek modernist design with all the comforts of home. It’s also ideally located in the heart of the city.

What’s hip?

Bristol’s vibrant street-art scene goes well beyond Banksy and a guided tour is a great way to see the sights and new paintings that pop up every week. More wall-based fun can also be had on Charlton Street at The Climbing Academy, a brilliant venue for bouldering that will get the heart pumping and take you to new heights.

If I do one thing?

Walk across the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, another Brunel-designed engineering wonder.
